Day 32: Atchison, KS to Seneca, KS (76.3 miles)
Last night, we retreated to our tents right after dinner, due to rain and wind. Three storms at 8:30, midnight, and 2 am tested my tent. Happy to report a dry evening! Got out this morning at 7:30 am, to a cool, clear morning, perfect bike riding weather. Lots of cattle , wheat, hay, and open farmland on our ride today. We saw some really “wide open spaces”. We traveled through the towns of Effingham, Muscotah, Whiting, Netawaka, Corning, and Seneca. Muscotah was a great stop for pie (raisen cream) and coffee. It is also the birthplace of Joe Tinker, a hall of fame baseball player for the Cubs and Reds, and best known as part of the “Tinker to Evers to Chance” infield combination. He played from 1902-1916, was inducted in the hall of fame in 1946 and died in 1948. We also stopped in Netawaka to eat our lunch at the fire station. In Corning, we turned north and was smacked with an unrelenting headwind for 14 miles. We powered through it to get to Seneca, where we are staying at Bailey’s RV Campground and Resort.
