Jun 11 Day 31: Lawson, MO to Atchison, KS (75.6 miles)

Last night’s sleep was punctuated by the howling of coyotes around 2 am for about 10 minutes. Cool temps last night made for good sleeping. After the typical breakfast of yogurt with granola, blueberries, and strawberries followed by a bowl of cereal (or oatmeal), we began the ride around 7 am. We left Watkins Mill SP, went past Jesse James’ Farm, and Smithville lake, before arriving in Paradise. With only a general store and a few other buildings, Paradise was not what I expected. We made our way on beautiful country back roads, eventually ending up in Platte City. Found a nice cafe, called Bee Creek, scoffed down a bacon and turkey sandwich with a mango smoothie and a scone, and used their Wifi. From Platte City, the route got interesting, as we diverted from the planned route to avoid flooding. We biked on SR92, crossed the Missouri to get into Kansas, at Leavenworth. The roads near the bridge were tight and crowded, tough biking. Once in Kansas, the road opened up. We pedaled past the State Penitentiary, a very intimidating place. We rode up SR73 and Old SR73 to get to today’s destination- Warnock Lake Campground.
