Day 63: Powell Junction, ID to Syringa, ID (72.8 miles)
Today’s ride was truly magnificent, with the entire day either level or downhill and along the Lochsa River. The many views of clear water tumbling over rocks, with majestic pine trees, deep blue sky, and puffy white clouds was just amazing.
The only other town we passed through before reaching Syringa, was Lowell, where we stopped for some huckleberry ice cream. We saw several bridges across the river, which were impressive. The Lochsa Historical Ranger Station was a good stop 25 miles from Lowell, and was used up until Route 12 was built in the mid 1960’s, for forest fire detection. About 6 miles from Syringa, a bald eagle flew over Bruce and I about 50 ft above us, pretty cool.
Our destination for tonight was the Syringa Lodge, a beautiful group of cabins on the Clearwater River. (The Selway and Lochsa Rivers join at Lowell to become the Clearwater). I tried fishing in the evening but the water was still warm after a 90+ degree day. Surprisingly, today was the first really hot day of the ride.
