Day 56: Madison, WY to Ennis, MT (87.3 miles)
Group got out early because of the high mileage day. The ride out of Madison to West Yellowstone was gorgeous, along the Madison River. I saw elk and bison. Just before arriving in West Yellowstone, we entered Montana. In West Yellowstone, I stopped at Bob Macklin’s fly shop to get flies and meet Bob, a Catskill Fly Fishing Hall of Fame fisherman / author.
Next we took Route 287 by Hebgen Lake, then went by Quake Lake, the site of a major earthquake in August 1959. Continuing along the Madison, I saw many drift boats in the river, as the Salmon fly hatch is in progress, a big deal in this area. We went through the town of Cameron before reaching Ennis. Our night’s destination was Camper Corner, a small but accommodating campground with great bathrooms. Gerri and I cooked dinner, a chicken and vegetable stir fry, that the group enjoyed.
