Day 40: From Enders, NE to Holyoke, CO (50.0 miles)
Last evening was amazing. I tried fishing in Ender Reservoir, was unsuccessful, but instead witnessed a phenomenal sunset. The sky display was magnificent. After going to sleep, we were all awoken at 2:45 am by a brief but intense (5-10 minute) windstorm, which had me holding on to my tent poles for dear life! I would guess the winds were blowing at 25 - 35 mph. My bike, which was covered, was blown over, then the cover acted like a parachute and my bike was dragged 30 ft away!
We woke up to a pretty sunrise and got on the road by 7:45. Today’s ride was stellar, pretty flat, lots of farmland, and expansive views. The town of Imperial was the only significant town all day. We stopped at the Women’s Boutique / Coffee Shop, and met Mary Terryberry, a local woman who was able to get the local golf club opened so Yo and Ber could watch the Netherlands WWC team play. Nothing like small town connections.
Biking another 13 miles, we crossed into “Colorful” Colorado, as the sign says. Our destination tonight is the City Park in Holyoke, CO. Earlier this afternoon, several of us were able to find a restaurant (Kardale’s) which allowed us to watch the US vs Sweden WWC Match, which the US won 2-0. Our destination for tonight is the City Park near the fairgrounds in Holyoke, Colorado. Tonight, Cousin Dan and I are cooking for the group. Chicken and steak fajitas are on the menu. (They turned out great!) While cooking, we were informed that the area is under s tornado watch from 4:30 to 10 pm. We saw dark, ominous clouds, and got some rain, but no tornados.
